Plaquemines Parish : Christmas 2006

As Christmas was a down day, we decided to take advantage of the situation. She learned well and the challah was served after the Christmas dinner. I wonder if....
Some day, maybe 35 years from now, a nice Jewish boy or girl will turn to their grandmother on Shabbat and ask “where did you learn to make such good challah?” Grandma will turn
to them and tell them a story like this.
you learn to make such good challah?’ Grandma will turn to them and tell them a story
like this...”
“Way back in 2005 a disaster hit a small town in Louisiana called Buras. Almost a year and a half later I went to help rebuild the community. I fell in love with the residents there and even went to their Christmas church service. The group I went with was called Emergency Communities and was located in the ruins of the local YMCA. There was an older volunteer there that loved to make bread and cinnamon rolls and who taught two of the other volunteers how to bake. For a goy, he made a pretty good challah. He also played Santa at the Christmas party.
“So, on Christmas day he volunteered to teach me. We started the bread in the morning, and served it after dinner. It was a big hit, even with the other members of the tribe. I even have a picture of that first challah. So yes, a goy who played Santa at a YMCA taught me on Christmas day how to make challah.”
